You don\u2019t have to be an expert to be able to build things.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He believes we\u2019re rapidly approaching that new world where anyone can build a great SaaS product.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep reading to learn what the four most common SaaS assumptions are, and watch Adam knock each one down with the power of generative AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"&quot;Generative AI and the Inversion of SaaS with AWS | SaaStr Software Community\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tcuCg_vg_DY?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Common Assumptions About SaaS<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many, many assumptions and standard ways of doing SaaS, with four of them being:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need deep domain expertise to design the app.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s expensive and time-consuming to build software.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult for customers to configure, integrate, and extend.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go-to-Market is expensive and labor-intensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s break those ideas down a little.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>#1 You need deep domain expertise to design an app.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an assumption that as a founder or Head of Product, you need a deep understanding of the business domain your users are in \u2014 how they think and want to work, regulatory and reporting requirements, etc.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To build an app for that industry, you need to know a business to build SaaS for it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>#2 It\u2019s expensive and time-consuming to build software.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The assumption is you have to write a lot of code, have a custom UI, a nice look, and fit the users\u2019 needs and flow.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The belief is if your product doesn\u2019t work fast, have all of the right features, or a great UX, the customer will bounce.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That makes sense. It takes time to build.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>#3 It\u2019s difficult for customers to configure, integrate, and extend.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers don\u2019t just want a product today. They want one that fits their unique needs and integrates with their data sources and third-party things.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is you have a big backlog, and the bad news is you have a big backlog.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to build a lot of extensibility into the product so customers can self-serve and make adjustments to meet their needs.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a big lift, and the universe of things the customer wants gets bigger and bigger.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>#4 GTM is expensive and labor-intensive.\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Th<\/strong>ere\u2019s this belief that the whole mechanics of getting a SaaS product to market \u2014 making them aware, hooking their interest, qualifying, and discovery \u2014 takes a lot of time.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of amazing salespeople in this business, and this is a big chunk of running a great SaaS business or a great GTM motion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, it\u2019s time to knock over all of these beliefs with generative AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Debunking Traditional SaaS Beliefs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-294690 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.saastr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-11-06-at-8.18.06-AM.png?resize=600%2C335&#038;quality=70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/335;\" \/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-294690 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.saastr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-11-06-at-8.18.06-AM.png?resize=600%2C335&#038;quality=70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"335\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generative AI inverts all of the assumptions above, and we\u2019re at the start of it, not the end.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When these three things come together \u2014 Cloud platforms, new builder and dev tools, and generative AI \u2014 it creates a tipping point.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let\u2019s go through each of the common SaaS beliefs and debunk them with AI.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#1 You will be able to build an app without deep domain expertise.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first assumption is that it requires deep domain expertise to design.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam came up with the wildest idea he could think of for an app and used Anthrop\\c, a large language model company, to help develop the idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea he typed was:\u00a0<\/span><b>I\u2019d like to create a SaaS application for a veterinary dental practice that serves zoos. Could you write down the core features, data model, and primary functionality the app should have?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI starts spitting out information.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam knows nothing about vets or zoos and only a little about SaaS. It can take a lot of knowledge in the world and express it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This accomplishes the pieces you need to do product definition in SaaS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the data model?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a lot of vets do data modeling, so it translates part of the product management function for developers to be able to pick it up and work with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next question to ask your AI assistant is:\u00a0<\/span><b>Are there any specific features around dental work for elephants or pachyderms?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gives treatment area, sizing, positioning, diet planning, referrals, etc.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a lot of knowledge you can use to tease out and express the different elements in your SaaS app.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you push it even further. You tap in what you need, and it builds an iterative site for you.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designers and product marketers will use tools like this to build and explain products to your customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#3 Integration and customization get easier as you get bigger.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it happens later in your journey as you get bigger, but your customers have unique use cases.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies like Zapier come in and connect a customer\u2019s SaaS apps together.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, your customer knew what Zapier was, and it wasn\u2019t hard, but it was extra work.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coming soon, you\u2019ll be able to enter a prompt that\u2019ll connect Quickbooks to Hubspot to anything else you need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a cool media automation to help customers get more value out of your SaaS application.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the image below, you\u2019ll see the headline that language models can teach themselves to use these different tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-294694 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.saastr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-11-06-at-8.27.01-AM.png?resize=600%2C333&#038;quality=70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 600\/333;\" \/><noscript><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-294694 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.saastr.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screenshot-2023-11-06-at-8.27.01-AM.png?resize=600%2C333&#038;quality=70&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"333\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when you give your LLM a task, it goes off, and uses those tools to complete it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll see this more generally in the ecosystem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this integration and customization customers want as you get bigger will get easier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#4 The ability for your teams to show or articulate the value of your product will be more effortless.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a mental model that GTM and the mechanics of it are expensive and labor intensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some things included in that GTM expense are:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketers generate content for awareness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales developer reps work with emails, scripts, and coaching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Account Executives discover, qualify, and shepherd opportunities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales Engineers demonstrate value and handle questions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>SDRs<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone knows about building content for awareness \u2014 blog posts, articles, how-to\u2019s, sponsored content, etc.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your SDRs, what do they do?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their goal is to get on the phone and generate interest.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They work with giant lists, research, learn call scripts, compare other call scripts, and dial in parallel.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI is now assisting with dialing, cold emailing, and follow-ups.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything described is going to be assisted with ML technology.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you have a big pool of SDRs and a ton of communications going out. You have 10,000 emails, and 37 of them worked.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Language models can summarize what it was about the pitch or hook that generated interest.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not cutting a corner to save time but making sense of a large pool of information and raising the bar for all customer interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>AEs<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AEs discover and shepherd the opportunity through. You listen and understand the customers\u2019 needs and translate what your product does into the customer&#8217;s needs.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s a process \u2014 a demo or proof of value or a security questionnaire.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every one of those things is summarizing and generating from your arsenal of content and translating into a customer story that resonates.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foundation models will do that.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sales Engineers<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to selling SaaS is a demo or test environment customized for the customer.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more you can tune it for them and it speaks to their needs, the better.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You preload data, preconfigure screens, team structure, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the same as the coding stuff. Foundation models will do this for you or with you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales engineers increase their ability and speed to show or articulate the value of your product to customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Overall<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most teams are probably experimenting with generative AI.
